Is a Plantar Wart Painful?

If you’ve ever had a plantar wart, you are most likely aware of the intense pain and tenderness that is typically experienced while walking. It is known to be caused by the human papillomavirus, which is also referred to as HPV. This particular type of virus typically affects the heel of the foot, and will grow inward as a result of the pressure the heel endures from everyday activities such as walking. The appearance can be a small area with thickened skin and may sometimes have black dots in the center. Treatment options may include utilizing liquid nitrogen that will freeze the wart off, salicylic acid cream, which may be used to burn the wart off, or specific medicine that is applied directly to the wart. About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Inflammation of the nerve, which runs along the inside of the foot and ankle, is often referred to as tarsal tunnel syndrome. It is typically a result of  overuse of the entire ankle and may often occur because walking or running is practiced for extended periods of time. Occasionally, a sudden injury may be a cause of this condition, often producing similar symptoms. These include pain and discomfort in the ankle and surrounding areas, and may be tender to the touch. To alleviate the pain, rest is typically suggested in addition to elevating the affected foot above heart level, which can help to reduce blood flow to the ankle. Recent research has suggested that when ankle exercises are performed, the foot generally becomes stronger when repeated frequently. These exercises may include gently rolling the ankle in a circular motion, and moving the ankle up and down. Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

Causes of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a common ailment and may typically be noticed by the yellowing and thickening of the affected toenail. If left untreated, the nail may gradually turn black and may cause an unsightly appearance. There may be several reasons for this condition to occur, including sweaty feet caused by wearing shoes that do not allow enough air to circulate, or enduring specific health issues such as psoriasis or diabetes. The toenail fungus may cause an infection, and it’s suggested to consult with a podiatrist if the infection should become severe. A proper diagnosis can be performed, which may include testing a portion of the nail to determine the exact cause of the infection followed by discussing correct treatment options.
